Crossover
Designed for both guitar and bass, Great Eastern FX's XO Crossover splits your signal into high and low frequency bands, which are sent to two independent effects loops. This means that you can apply separate effects to the high and low frequency portions of your signal, or even send them to two different amps.
Whether you want to restrict a particular effect to just one part of the frequency spectrum – fuzz on just the lows, for example, or reverb on just the highs – or combine different effects on the two bands at the same time, the XO opens up a whole host of creative possibilities.
And for bass guitar, the ability to apply effects to the mid and high frequencies while leaving the lows untouched effectively means that no guitar pedal is off-limits.
The XO is built around a pair of active, 12dB/octave filters – one high-pass, one low-pass – arranged into what is known as a crossover.
The XO's real power comes from the Crossover Frequency control, which lets you move the dividing point between the high and low bands up and down the frequency spectrum. The Range switch toggles between frequency ranges designed to suit guitar (300Hz to 3.4kHz) and bass (50Hz to 600Hz).
You can use the XO’s high and low send-return loops one at a time, adding modulation to just the lower portion of the signal, for example, or distorting just the highs while leaving the rest of the signal clean. Or you can combine two effects at once – a warm delay on the lows and a shimmering reverb on the highs, for example, or even twin delay or modulation effects set at different speeds.
The pedal also features a Return Balance control, which adjusts the relative level of the two return signals. With nothing plugged into the two effects loops, this control effectively turns the XO into a tilt EQ, increasing the level of the low band while decreasing the level of the high band or vice versa. Unlike most tilt EQs, however, here you can move the centre frequency up or down.
The XO also features a global dry blend control to adjust the overall wet/dry mix, a phase switch that puts the high and low bands out of phase, and a handy button to swap the high and low sends over so you can hear what the effects you’ve connected sounds like on the other half of the signal without having to unplug and re-patch anything.
CROSSOVER FREQ: Moves the center frequency of the crossover – the point at which the signal is split into high and low bands – up or down the frequency spectrum. Everything above the center frequency goes to the high send. Everything below goes to the low send.
RANGE: Sets the range of the Crossover Freq control to suit guitar or bass. Push switch down for bass (50Hz to 600Hz) and up for guitar (300Hz to 3.4kHz).
PHASE: Press down to put the high and low bands out of phase. Can be used for creative effect or to prevent phase cancellation if the high and low bands end up out of phase following processing.
SEND FLIP: Swaps the high and low sends over. With the switch down, the high band is routed to the low send and the low band is routed to the high send. This allows you to instantly swap over the effects placed in the two send/return loops without having to re-patch any cables.
RETURN BALANCE: Adjusts the relative level of the two effects returns, allowing you to adjust for any changes in level created by the effects you are using. When no effects are in use, the Return Balance control acts like a tilt EQ, emphasizing the high or low band.
DRY BLEND: Sets the overall wet/dry mix. Turn clockwise to mix in the pre-send dry signal with the effected signal.
There are only a few options out there for this type of utility pedal (and indeed, most have basically become unobtanium these days), yet every pedal-head really ought to have AT LEAST ONE of these devices for sonic experimentation. A frequency-split crossover pedal is a massive force multiplier regarding new possibilities for your pedal collection, even if one's particular usage is very subtle (a bit of glow to the high spectrum, a bit of delay to only the lowest bass). This studio-realm effect really isn't possible in a pedal-chain without such a device (certainly not without a LOT of trouble to recreate this effect as effortlessly as the XO can).
The XO provides all of the important elements you'd want in a crossover pedal (phase toggle, etc.), but I think its secret weapon for experimentation is the "send flip" toggle. Whilst trying out one's pedal menagerie in the low/high freq. loops, this makes it MUCH more convenient (and fun!) to swap the 2 send loop paths and tweak the crossover point/etc. while determining low/high loop-chain preference. I don't believe any other crossover pedal has this quick-swap feature, and once you've tried it, it becomes essential for this type of device. The "range" toggle is also a rather unique bonus, and shows that G.E.FX is carefully considering practical usage and satisfaction for a variety of instruments/players. Lovely!
I picked up the XO to use in a bass synth chain so I can keep the sub-octave clean. It works like a charm. Can’t wait to try it out with all sorts of other effects. Even with just a guitar pedal in the high loop, and a comp in the lows.
I’m a bass player who loves experimenting with pedals, but I’ve always struggled finding bass specific versions of effects I'm interested in. Over the years, I’ve accumulated plenty of guitar pedals that just didn’t work well for bass. The Eastern FX Xo pedal completely solved this problem for me. The ability to split the signal so I can run effects only through the high end while keeping the lows intact opens up a ton of options. All the pedals that had been collecting dust sound are usable and sound great.
In addition, tonal quality of this setup is far more natural and musical than any “clean blend” circuit I’ve tried on bass-specific pedals. For me, blending a full clean signal with an effected one never quite felt right — but with the XO my tone sounds right to me.
If you’re a bass player who loves effects but hates losing low-end definition, I can’t recommend this pedal enough.
Great Pedal, Great Service. Fast Delivery.
This pedal has opened up some very interesting territory for me and my electric cello, and I feel like there is still a lot more to discover. I’ve been promoting it to other low end players, and there has been a good bit of excitement.
