The Fuzziest side of the VoxUL730
The UL amp series was the first Vox amps to feature a built-in “distortion” circuit controlled by a footswitch, one of the first ones to use shunt diodes or hard clipping to saturate the guitar’s signal. Although they named it distortion, the resultant tone was closer to a fuzz than what we understand nowadays as a distortion pedal.
The Mocker is based in the fuzz/distortion circuit of the Vox UL730, whereas the Dr Robert recreates the normal channel of the amp, the tube’s saturation.
Regarding the diodes we mention, finding those specific ones (a batch of 200) allowed us to match the ones used in the original amp, attaining its characteristic vintage fuzz tone. When we were designing the Dr Robert, we already tried to integrate the fuzz side of the amp, but these components weren’t available. Since we couldn’t achieve the desired fuzz tone, we decided to go for a device that recreated the tube’ saturation instead, the Dr Robert.
