The Electronic Audio Experiments Longsword is yet another contender in the endless void of op-amp based drive pedals, but it is one that takes the topology in a novel direction. Cascaded gain stages allow for the full range from clean boost to massive distortion, all without sacrificing tonal flexibility. The equalizer combines bass and treble shelving filters with an active, frequency-selectable midrange boost/cut control. This lets the user sculpt a diverse array of tones and carve out a niche in even the most dense of mixes. The Longsword has a broad frequency response which makes it work equally well with guitar, baritone, and bass.
Level: output volume
Drive: go from light grit to heavy overdrive
Low/High: James/Baxandall tone stack (shelving filters)
Mid: active midrange boost/cut
Shift: selects frequency controlled by Mid pot
Diode: selects between clipping diodes, to alter dynamics and headroom
Up: MOSFET clipping, medium compression
Center: no diodes, minimal compression
Down: Silicon diode clipping, maximum compression
Boost (Footswitch): engages a front end mid boost
Boost (Knob): adds up to 20dB of gain when the Boost is engaged
Bypass: Relay switching with true bypass
I had been pretty set with my gain section for a while and I know what I like before I discovered all of the EAE pedals. I knew what my ears were telling me, but told myself could this actually be better than what I have?
To make a long story short, oh yeah
The Longsword is the best OD/Distortion I’ve ever played and fits with so many other pedals and most importantly in a mix. Can’t recommend highly enough!
as someone that loves heavy music like my bloody valentine it's very hard to find a pedal that creates those tones. most distortion is fuzz or metal. somehow this pedal is the perfect balance between edge of break up, overdrive and distortion. can get amazing clean tones for chicken pickin' on a telecaster or heavy single notes like dinosaur jr. i use this in conjunction with my mxr micro amp at the end of OD chain for boost and my ODD warm pedal.
The EAE Longsword V4.6 absolutely lives up to its reputation. It’s incredibly versatile, with everything from articulate low-gain drive to huge, aggressive distortion, while still retaining clarity and note definition. The EQ is exceptionally useful, and there’s a depth and responsiveness to the pedal that makes it feel much more like an amp than a typical distortion box. Build quality is outstanding as well.
Just as impressive was my experience with Sound Shoppe NYC. Great communication, fast shipping, and the pedal arrived exactly as expected. It’s always nice to find a dealer that clearly appreciates great gear and takes care of its customers. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy from them again. Highly recommended.
