Orientation

This Box of Rock™ simulates Zachary’s favorite amp turned up all the way, a 1966 Marshall® JTM45. The tone control adjusts brightness and there’s a high-headroom low-noise boost.

The Box of Rock™ is ZVEX Effect’s first “distortion” pedal, highly specialized to simulate the “everything on 10” sound of a classic Marshall® JTM45 non-master-volume amplifier. You may use the Box of Rock™ effectively with many different amplifiers. Once you’ve set your maximum needed drive on the pedal, use your guitar’s volume control to adjust for the exact amount of distortion you need, all the way down to very clean and clear with most drive settings. The Box of Rock™ also contains an extremely high-headroom, unity-to-50X gain booster with nominal input impedance and low hiss. It is very similar to the SHO boost circuit, with refinements to make it sound more like a standard amp input and less glassy. The boost channel can be used alone or in conjunction with the “distortron engine” channel. The boost channel follows the distortion channel so that the distortion is able to hit your amp harder (at a higher volume) when both switches are engaged, for boosting solos and what-not. Look out when boosting what-not.

  • Boost

Sets the boost level, which is engaged with the left stomp switch. [Start around 11:00 o’clock]. The Drive and Boost controls are based on my original Super Hard On™ gain control, so they may crackle when turned. This is perfectly normal.

  • Volume

Adjust for distortron engine volume level.

  • Tone

    Adjust for treble content.

  • Drive

    Sets the amount of distortion.

Didn't meet my expectations

As an overdrive I think this is a great option. But as an amp in a box style pedal, I don't know that it stands up to the competition.

Favorite amp in a box

Found it as good as any other pedal try to recreate a marshall. The trick seems to be to have a flat frequency eq set up and let this work its magic. For what it is, it works well.

The one that got away…

I tried a bunch of amps in search of “my sound” and landed on the Marshall JTM 45 for dirty sounds and a Fender Twin for clean. The Fender won out but this stellar pedal brought the JTM mojo to my dirt section. Mine eventually broke and I replaced it with something else… but I sometimes regret that choice. Definitely worth a try!

One my all time favs!

One of the best BB styles I’ve ever used! Great breakup and a sweet boost to boot!
It really does react like an amp which is fantastic when you roll down your volume to clean it up, but it really just sounds great as a stand-alone overdrive. Great dynamics and pairs with amps very very well!

Insanity

If you’re craving the unmistakable sound of a vintage Marshall, The Box of Rock is as close to the real thing as you’ll get in the form of a pedal. The mid range on this pedal is where it truly shines; especially with an SG pushing it, you can get a near spot-on Angus Young sound. The boost pushes low wattage tube amps in to gloriously saturated heights.

Buy this. It’s insanity in a pedal.
